Transparent connection sharing was possible before OpenSSH 5.6 by using a ssh wrapper script that does the job. My script does something like that for INRIAGforge:

[[ $1 != gforge || -e /tmp/ssh-scm.gforge.inria.fr-22-vlefevre ]] || ssh -fMN gforge

ssh -C "$@"

The only problem is that stderr of the background ssh is not redirected after the connection succeeds. So, for instance, if one wants to filter svn's standard error stream, the filter blocks unless one does something special (e.g. an end marker to kill the filter, as my svnwrapper script does).
