Compared to other *interpreters*, CPython is the fastest one that existsThat is extremely debatable. In general, when given a choice between speed and implementation clarity, Python has gone for the latter.
Lua is one example of an interpreter immensely faster than CPython (partly simply because it is smaller: the entire interpreter fits in L2 cache on my machine; Python will barely fit in L3.)
