Personal experience is the best way, but not the only one. In fact there is a whole industry devoted to letting people know what products are good and which aren't, and endless community forums where people give their opinion. And of course there is the comment section of LWN where I have learned more than in all other places combined.

When these resources keep quiet about something, usually it is not worth trying.

I would not expect to find many anecdotes about Ingres in this comments section.

There are many database systems (relational and non-relational) performing very well for relatively
small user communities (have you heard of GT/M, for example?) That the mainstream doesn't talk
about them much does not correlate well with their quality, reliability, richness of features, level of
innovation etc. Naturally MySQL gets most attention. But in fact a wider survey of the field turns up
much more interesting things.

If you want for something to make the Slashdot front page, you'll miss many good things.
