The egcs fork of gcc was so successful that the original maintainers handed
over the keys. Apache was an NCSA httpd fork, and was, of course, wildly
successful.

I doubt that Oracle would abandon the MySQL trademark if one
of the forks became more popular, but I'm guessing the fork won't have a
huge problem establishing an alternate brand.

It's almost impossible for me to imagine how neglect by Oracle would *not*
result in a successful fork of MySQL.
