WHAT'S UP WITH RED HAT'S EMBEDDED STRATEGY?
Last week, we brought you news that Red Hat has discontinued
development of its eCos open source embedded operating system,
laying off seven of its nine-member U.K.-based eCos development
team. "That area is something we have moved on from," said Red
Hat chief operating officer Tim Buckley in a June 18 interview with
CNET's Stephen Shankland. Just what "area" is it that Red Hat has
"moved on from", and where have they "moved on" to? To gain
further insight into Red Hat's current embedded market strategy,
LinuxDevices.com founder Rick Lehrbaum caught up with Red Hat's
Chief Technology officer, Michael Tiemann.

SHARP INTRODUCES NEW VERSION OF LINUX-BASED ZAURUS PDA IN JAPAN
Sharp announced a new Linux-based handheld for the Japanese market.
The company introduced the device at a press conference in Tokyo
on Monday. The Zaurus SL-A300 uses Intel's 200MHz XScale PXA210
processor equipped with 64MB of memory, has a 320 x 240 pixels TFT
LCD display, and like its predecessor it provides both SD Card and
CompactFlash expansion. This news item includes more details, a
photo, and a link to specifications (in Japanese) on Sharp's
website.

KORGANIZER/EMBEDDED 1.0 RELEASED
The first stable release of the embedded version of KDE's famous
calendar and scheduling tool, KOrganizer/Embedded is available.
KOrganizer/Embedded is the PDA version of KOrganizer for the Qtopia
desktop. It has been developed for and tested on a Sharp Zaurus,
but it should also work on other PDAs able to run Qt/Embedded.
KOrganizer/Embedded uses a small KDE compatibility library,
microkde, which provides the KDE features required to run
KOrganizer/Embedded.

GNU BAYONNE 1.0 PRELIMINARY RELEASE AND CALL FOR HELP
After two years of development, a 1.0 preliminary release candidate
for GNU Bayonne has now emerged. GNU Bayonne is a freely licensed
telephony server which may be used to create, deploy, and manage
embedded, standalone, and web-integrated telephony voice response
solutions. The preliminary 1.0 release supports a new driver that
allows anyone with a sound card to test or debug a GNU Bayonne
server, simulate call flow, and create or debug GNU Bayonne
telephony applications -- and the project is asking for volunteers
to help in various areas.

Microsoft's Bill Gates announced 'Mira' in his keynote address at
the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this year.
According to Microsoft, Mira is the codename for a set of Windows
