The release of 5.9.0 was 4 years before the release of 5.10.0. Is it reasonable to expect that the 5.12 release is 3-4 years down the road?

The p5p mailing list has a couple of discussions about more frequent releases. In particular, several people would like to see yearly major releases. Hopefully that will mean 5.12 within a year.

Does that mean a module ABI break every year as well? :/

Potentially, but not necessarily. Four years between major releases means an ABI break is very likely. One year between major releases makes it less so.

It depends how often they normally do ABI breaks on trunk. If they're
normally rare, then your estimate is likely. If on the other hand they
break on a weekly basis then we'll see more breaks the more often they
release :) as they lump lots of breaks together into one user-visible
break.

So I'm glad to hear the break frequency is much lower than that!
