Breakfast in Portland

The Linux Plumbers Conference in beginning in Portland. The conference organizers are starting things off with a sugar-loaded bang, including something your editor had never seen before: bacon-topped donuts. With a lead-off like that, how can this conference go wrong?

I'm surprised you haven't seen these before, Jon; they are a local specialty, and I have to assume you've been to Portland many times before. My first time in Portland I'm pretty sure it was less than six hours before I was having those piping hot off the griddle (at around midnight.) If I were you I might well be tempted to spend the rest of the weekend inquiring with previous hosts to ask why they did not show you the same courtesy my host did ;)

My hosts focused on the beer, I guess - and that was just fine with me...

The two are not exclusive! I believe my first visit to Portland went something like: get off plane, beerfest, dinner (at a brewery), maple-bacon doughnut, more beer, sleep. But the important thing is that now you know.

FWIW, 'Voodoo Doughnut' (as seen on the label) is the name of the store; it is in downtown somewhere. Make sure to visit in person; it is a very Portland kind of place.

Last time I was in Portland, my kids wanted to hit Voodoo. At about 10:30 at night, the line was out the door and around the corner...

Dang. I grew up in Oregon and I don't think I've ever seen one of these!

Should we assume that the average life expectancy of a Linux Plumbers Conference attendee has now dropped by 10 years ?

Hell, my arteries screamed just *looking* at it. I'm wondering if the
average life expectancy of LWN readers has dropped too :)

Nobody needs to send this link to Scalzi, by the way, I already took care of it...

Is it now internet law that all bacon references must be forwarded to John Scalzi?

Not that I disapprove, I'm just wondering.

Is there a law that says everything mentioning bacon gets sent to Scalzi?

Well, I've never seen one, but based on reading his blog, the rest of the world seems to think there is.

Are those things sweet or salty? I mean, everything but the bacon itself.

If you're that interested in bacon, go to Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, MI. It's one of the world's most recognized and loved delis (not an exaggeration). One of the owners, Ari, recently put out a book on better bacon, and during the summer they were running a lot of bacon-inspired specials, including bacon-in-gelato, among other things. They will definitely still have them on request if they're not still on the menu.

Their bacon is _the freaking best_, and they have have found some pretty interesting uses for bacon that seem batshit insane at first glance and turn out totally scrumptious at first taste.

The Ann Arbor LUG has met a few times there as well, so you can turn it into a Linux-related experience if helps seal the deal any. ;)

I sure hope the Japanese will develop their care taking robots for old people a little faster .. with food like this there is business from Americans of every age to be had.
Those things look totally disgusting, they just scream fat, cancer and every weight related illness there is.
In the future the US government will probably sue the food companies like they sued the tobacco companies.

GOOD food isn't anywhere near the cancer etc risk it's touted to be. I think you'll find there's a VERY strong correlation between "fast food" and obesity and its related problems.

Certainly from the study I did for my masters, I came to the conclusion that diabetes is at least partly down to the modern habit of snacking all through the day.

Sugar is - biologically - an EXTREMELY nasty substance. Our bodies are designed to withstand a *temporary* assault when we eat and then get it back down to a low level where we clean up the mess it's caused. Except that snacking never lets it get that low ...

And hardening of the arteries is due to being overweight ... cholesterol is *meant* to stick to bloodcell walls, so the cells can absorb it, but if there's too much then it sits there and waits.

Cheers,
Wol

Food in the Portland area is just great, Voodoo Donuts being one of the rarities you won't easily find in other places. Too bad I couldn't make it this year, but at least I can look forward to some good Sushi at JLS next month.

Mmm... bacon and doughnuts—two of the basic food groups together in a dreamy combination. I just might have to travel to Portland and try one. :)

As an Aussie these were the weirdest donut's I'd ever seen, but the bacon ones were *delicious*.

I ate the one in the bottom left corner of the photo. It's the same taste as in maple-flavored bacon. Plenty of sugar, plenty of fat, just add coffee and it's everything a hacker needs. :-)

I would never eat these on a regular basis, but as a one-time experience, it was delectable.
