Slackware 13.0 released

The Slackware 13.0 release is out. "Probably the biggest change is the addition of an official 64-bit port. While the 32-bit (x86) version continues to be developed, this release brings to you a complete port to 64-bit (x86_64). We know that many of you have been waiting eagerly for this, and once you try it you'll see it was well worth the wait." See the release notes for more information.

I can't believe there are still Linux distros advertising a 64bits port, in 2009 ...

Not exactly: it's advertising an *official* 64-bit port.

Slamd64 had its first release more than four years ago, on January 2005.

Slackware gets to be less of a cottage industry every day, but only by becoming better-integrated with its community as a means of support. If the hardware were binary incompatible, this port might have been forced sooner, and being 32-bit only would have been a problem. But then, binary incompatibility kills 64-bit desktop processor options anyways. The fact that this port can be not only brought under the same "roof" as the 32-bit Slackware, but also synchronized so that both can be maintained as Slackware going forward, is a big deal when you don't have corporate backing.

Well, there has always been pkgtool which has a dialog-based interface but I guess that's not what you want.

This release now has slackpkg which will automate some package-related tasks. Speaking of which, I'm going to grab my external hard-drive, check I have the latest rsync and slacpkg upgrade-all (that's not the only thing to do in general but I've already done the first part).

And there is also sbopkg which you can get at sbopkg.org and which uses slackbuilds.org to build packages. Also, if you're on slackware64, export ARCH=x86_64 before running sbopkg.

Slackpkg is highly-regarded (enough to make it into slackware ;) ) and sbopkg is too. You can use them without worrying.

And besides those, there is a lot of support for slapt-get, an APT clone. Even has a GUI, gslapt. The GNOME SlackBuild project ships it, or it can be gotten separately, and as long as the package properly defines its requirements, slapt-get does everything that you'd expect of a package tool.

What? Why?!?! How absurd. You obviously arent a slacker. Just because other distros do things stupidly doesnt mean Patrick will. Fortunately.
