I was under the impression that the *BSDs used X.org, but I haven't been able to verify that. If they did, then I would have thought the old modesetting will be carried for quite some time (unless there is work to implement KMS-like interfaces in the BSD kernels at the same time)

Yes, BSDs use Xorg, and there has been at least a little talk about KMS on BSD. I can't remember offhand where I saw that, though.
