The Linux Foundation recently announced it has appointed Axel Petrak as its
new Director of Europe, Middle East and Africa. Mr. Petrak will work with
companies and community members in the region to facilitate collaboration on
advancing Linux with activities such as exclusive events, training
workshops, technical workgroups, and more.

"While Linux benefits from a distributed development model that relies on
contributions from people around the globe, regional focus for Linux
Foundation activities can accelerate important work on the platform," said
Jim Zemlin, executive director, The Linux Foundation. "We're grateful to
have Axel, an executive of such high caliber and with perfectly-matched
experience, join our team."

==> Japan Linux Symposium: Early Registration, Linus Torvalds Keynote <==

The Linux Foundation has announced the opening of early registration for the
inaugural Japan Linux Symposium (JLS). The event, a new annual technical
conference designed to provide a collaboration and education space in the
Pacific Rim covering all matters Linux, takes place October 21-23, 2009 in
Tokyo, Japan.

JLS will bring together top talent from Japan, Asia Pacific, and around the
world, including a unique blend of core developers, administrators, users,
community managers and industry experts. It is designed not only to
encourage collaboration but to support future interaction between Japan and
other Asia Pacific countries and the rest of the global Linux community.

==> LinuxCon Program and Event Details Take Shape  <==

This year more than ever, it is important that people get the most value for
any event they attend.  The Linux Foundation has kept that in mind while
planning the agenda for LinuxCon, with the co-location of several events
within the LinuxCon event.

As LinuxCon approaches, more anticipation is building for the excellent
speakers planned for the event. Two of those speakers, Joe Brockmeier and
Noah Broadwater, were recently interviewed by Linux.com to discover more
about the messages they will be bringing to the Linux community this
September.

In his latest role as openSUSE Community Manager, Brockmeier offers a unique
point of view from the corporate and community sides of the
Linux ecosystem.

Broadwater, Vice President of Information Services at Sesame Workshop,
revealed a little bit more about his organization's use of Linux and how it
solved Sesame Workshop's problems as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Computerworld: Does Google Chrome OS Further Fragment Linux Landscape?
Jim Zemlin, executive director for the Linux Foundation, which oversees
development of the Moblin Linux OS for netbooks: "Linux and consumers are
the true winners.... The more companies and manufacturers base their
products on Linux, the stronger Linux becomes. Say goodbye to monopoly
pricing.

PC World: Group Pitches Linux for Free Netbooks From Mobile Carriers
Mobile carriers may start giving away netbooks for free, and Linux-based
application stores could help them profit by doing it, the head of a Linux
advocacy group told Chinese companies... The move by carriers to sell
netbooks at a discount and seek revenue from later application downloads is
an opportunity for Linux, Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux
Foundation, said at a Beijing forum. He urged Chinese and global companies
to consider offering devices and download stores based on Linux.

Ars Technica: New Linux Patch Could Circumvent Microsoft's FAT Patents
The Linux Foundation says that the best solution at this point is for
vendors to ditch FAT and come up with a new vendor-neutral format that can
be used without having to pay licensing fees. Although that might be a
viable long-term solution, there is still a clear need to support FAT in
Linux today. To facilitate this, developers are evaluating technical
workarounds while the Open Invention Network is seeking prior art for the
purpose of invalidating the patents.

Most of you have seen the news today from Google formally announcing their
Chrome Operating System for netbooks using Intel x86 and ARM chips. The is
painted as a classic "clash of the titans" between Google and Microsoft,
with Google finally directly assaulting Microsoft's top cash business. (They
have already opened the war against Microsoft's other cash cow, Office, with
Google Docs.) While this is a great story, I prefer to frame at as David vs
Goliath with the little OS that could, Linux, as the foundation of this
announcement, as well as the other operating systems challenging Windows.
