How about a sane server implementation of SyncML? I am surprised that this has not been a big itch for open source developers. It seems the only reliable solution is a that 500MB RAM gorilla of Funambol, not a sane solution for an individual to sync their phone with home. I have an almost completely free/libre/open source phone (android ADP), and yet I can find no way to sync to a home server so that I may keep my data private.

If you read Patrick Ohly's related post you'll see that synthesis includes a server:

Unfortunately, this server is not free/libre/opensource.

I believe eGroupware and Horde both include SyncML servers in PHP. There is also MultiSync in C which has several data engines, one that is SyncML. The main problem with SyncML is that the clients are all buggy and different.

"I believe eGroupware and Horde both include SyncML servers in PHP."

I think they just defer to funambol.

"There is also MultiSync in C which has several data engines, one that is SyncML"

Multisync became opensync, and is no longer developed as mulitsync, no? The SyncML piece of opensync does not really seem usable and the project seems to have been making steady but very slow progress for several years without a stable release.

No, they don't.

My bad, it's called Opensync. As to it being usable, I'm sure the developers are interested to know what needs improving.

For a free SyncML solution that is easily installed on a home Windows system, is easy to use and has a open developer support forum, try the Sun Mobility Platform. You will be able to sync to your home server and keep your data private and even encrypted on your android device:

Unfortunately, this is also not free/libre/opensource. It in fact is not really even free (as in beer) since it an evaluation copy only. But, at least, it does run on more than just Windows...
