Are there any projects out there doing anything different? It seems to me both the major ones (GNOME, KDE) and the minor projects (XFCE, LXDE,etc) all try to mimic the way Windows works, while the old style systems like OpenBox and Fluxbox are stuck in a rut of being "just" window managers.
