Announcing Moblin v2 Core Alpha Release

I can't wait to see a full distribution based on this work.
Linpus, the distro in my Aspire One, is based on Moblin, and it works like a champ. Specially nice is that it boots in just 15 seconds. This is the main reason why I haven't replaced it with Ubuntu.
Also, the Acer customization is so easy to work with that now my wife prefers it to her own XP laptop.

You're making me curious; what is , in your view, the difference between this alpha an "a full distribution based on this work" ?

What is Moblin?

Ok, I can read it and find the answer. This is really a reminder to both the Moblin team at Intel, and the editors at lwn, that any announcement like this should include a capsule summary of what the project is about. Otherwise folks like me have no idea whether it is of any interest to us or not.

Agreed. What, exactly, is Moblin? Is it a software program? An application suite/package? Or is it a Linux (or other FLOSS) distro?

From the link: "Moblin is a community open source project, initially targeting Intel® Atom™ based Netbooks." I'm only slightly more enlightened by that—I now know that I can't use Moblin as I don't have a computer with an Atom processor. Oh, well...

Exactly. Ris, you have habit of posting such uninformative announcements. Could you please elaborate a bit with a single-phrase description of the project, like the other LWN editors do? It would make your posts vastly more useful.

[But I suspect Ris doesn't read the comments to his posts, or he might have started doing this years ago...]

Ris == Rebecca Sobol: 'his' is probably the wrong pronoun :)

To clear up any mystery...

- Moblin is a Linux desktop initiative created by Intel to target specific platforms.

- Moblin originally was designed to target Intel MID devices, but with Moblin 2 they are changing the focus to more 'netbook'-style devices.

- Moblin v1 was based on Ubuntu, however V2 has migrated to Fedora as it's base.

Moblin is designed to take the Gnome-Mobile initiative and extend it further. Introducing new elements like the Clutter toolkit, which takes gnome objects and allows people to manage applications and gui elements using a simplified OpenGL-based interface with scenegraph-based management system. And taking the 'internet connected' gnome concept further.

Basically taking cutting edge 'Gnome 3.0' stuff, standardizing it, and creating a custom Fedora install that then can be made further custom by OEMs for their netbooks. Sort of like a 'Reference' Gnome environment, like Intel makes reference boards that people can then take and make more consumer oriented devices out of.

That's my impression of it based on surfing around their website.
