Novell reports leap in Linux revenues (ZDNet)

ZDNet examines the latest financial report from Novell. "Novell's Linux business grew by 33 percent over the fourth quarter last year, according to the company's latest financial figures. Identity and access management revenues were up 11 percent compared to the same period last year, and systems and resource management revenues climbed 15 percent. The quarterly results, released on Friday, show that just two areas declined. Novell's Workgroup business fell by nine percent, while its services business plunged by 26 percent."

MICROSOFT IS OBSOLETE AND READY FOR RETIREMENT

This is why Microsoft is obsolete. The 65-year-olds at Microsoft are so far gone, they must be retired or the company will not survive.

With the latest KDE and GNOME (the quality is going up), Microsoft is obsolete. It appears the Linux people finally took some CS-100 courses.

Not that CS-100 courses mean anything, but at least the basics are there. Now, if the Linux people can just take Software Engineering courses?

It's not possible to conclude from the cited article whether or not the Linux market is growing. A quote from the article:

Much of the business is a result of customers replacing products from competitors, especially Red Hat, McCarry said.

One would assume that this is part of a one time blip from those businesses that believe the patent FUD. Eventually those businesses will realize that they are paying for nothing. As far as Red Hat customers switching, take that with a grain of salt. Red Hat is the current MS/Novell target. If successful, they probably want to go after bigger targets like IBM and Sun. It make take the next five or ten years, but the dust will settle out. Red Hat could come out improved and stronger as a result which is only just.

I have a sneaking suspicion that McCarry is lying through his teeth. I'm sure that one could point to examples of a customer switching in that direction. But I'll bet there is no net flow that way.

With Red Hat's top of the list 97% customer loyalty rating and Novell not even showing in the top 10, it would be surprising to me if there were.

I don't know - SAP is pretty high on that list even though I've never met an actual SAP user who's satisfied with their product...

Actually the rating is given by CIOs, not by users. That may explain it.
