avoiding pops

Cleaning the record surface is a very important step. I'm told that it's necessary even if the LP has never been played, just because of some chemical reaction that occurs over time.

How can one find other digitizations of the same recording, to filter pops that way (on the assumption that the pops occur in different places) ? How can we make it easier to do in future?
