I've started using SuSE (when it was still called so) at version 5.2 and as far as I can
remember it has had Braille support in the installation system even then. I noticed,
because loading support and detecting Braille output took quite a few seconds.

Yes, SuSE's SuSE blinux has been providing auto-detection for quite
some time, though it's sometimes considered unsafe to try to send chars
on a serial port to see what is there :)
