Don't forget PortAudio. If you're going to judge a tree by its fruits, Audacity is a working application on the Microsoft, Apple, and Linux platforms (good enough that mic manufacturers can put a copy in a box with a USB mic and call it COMPLETE PODCASTING KIT) and it uses PortAudio.
