Phonon has been shipped with Qt 4.4 - release date May 6, 2008.

Some comments in the blog article, as well as the Wikipedia page describing Phonon you just linked to: look at the list of features, they all start with "Phonon will ...".

Phonon shipped with Qt-4.4 is still in experimental state. This is the first time they included externally developed open source code into they codebase, and apparently they followed the "release early" principle.

From Qt-4.4 documentation:
> Phonon and its Qt backends, though fully functional for multimedia playback, are still under development.
