OO.o: Best of open source productivity apps (InfoWorld)
=======================================================
OpenOffice.org is the granddaddy of Microsoft Office alternatives. Its
open source roots show in a set of features and functionality that is
perfectly at home in the multiplatform, equation-heavy atmosphere of
research and academe. For businesses, the only features that seem
significantly lacking are those for collaborating with multiple authors.
If you're looking for a single set of productivity apps that can work on
a wide variety of operating systems, then OpenOffice.org is a
well-supported, mature solution.

OO.o on Tom's Guide [David Bénard]
===================================
"We've talked up OpenOffice before in other articles, but the software
is worth a closer look since more and more companies are beginning to
dole it out to employees. OpenOffice is much more than a simple
alternative to Microsoft Office microsoft office . "

Get an office suite, free [Martin James, ComputerActive]
=========================
For years Microsoft Word has been the tool that many of us reach for
when we want to write a letter. Similarly, think about creating a
spreadsheet and Excel springs immediately to mind. But if you don't
already own a copy of Microsoft Office you could be in for a nasty
surprise when you see how much it costs.

Open Office vs. MS Office - the Other Key to Windows/Linux Transition
=====================================================================
"As I have been going around alternately prodding my friends and family
to try Linux, or asking them if they thought it would be possible, one
thing I have heard repeatedly is that a lot of people use Microsoft
Office and are concerned about their Office documents on Linux..."

Tips & Tricks

OpenOffice.org Tips and Tricks Part I
===================================
A little different and very good

"Using the free and open-source productivity suite OpenOffice.org can be
a godsend for those that don't want to hand over more money to
Microsoft. Its word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and database
applications almost mirror that of the MS Office suite. ..."

=======================================
Inserting Fontwork (WordArt)

Are you a WordArt fanatic? Can't find an equivalent text effect creator
in OOo? Well, you don't have to fret any longer, OOo's Fontwork feature
is here to save your day. As Figure 1 shows, Fontwork creates text
similar to WordArt.

Installing OO.o 3.0 on WINE
============================
"..I asked APT to install Wine on my Debian Linux with some documentation,
than I wondered what to do next ... and quickly learned to just invoke
...And to get an OOo running, including "quickstart" etc...

A False Sense of Security
=========================
When one thinks about signing, I dare to say, many only think about the
integrity aspect. That is, a digital signature prevents tampering around
with the data without being unnoticed. For example, during installation
of some signed software the system could report that the signature is
broken. The reasons could be that the data got garbled during
transmission, for example while downloading, or that someone modified it.

ISO rejects appeals against OOXML standardisation
=================================================
"The ISO and IEC have announced that the four appeals against the
controversial standardisation process for Office Open XML, OOXML, will
not progress any further. The International Standards Organisation and
the International Electrotechnical Commission said that the appeals by
Brazil, India, South Africa and Venezuela did not reach the required
two-thirds majorities in the respective management bodies - the ISO's
Technical Management Board (TMB) and the IEC's Standardisation
Management Board (SMB)..."

Microsoft's OOXML Wins ISO Approval
===================================
"It looks as if Microsoft's OOXML office document file format will be
published as an open standard after all. The International Standards
Organization (ISO) today rejected four appeals from subsidiary national
standards bodies that claimed ballot irregularities during the
standardization process. Had these appeals been upheld, an OOXML
standard could have been delayed indefinitely, despite Microsoft's best
efforts to fast-track the process...."

IBM VP: Office OpenXML a dead end, Microsoft will back ODF
==========================================================
"During the LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco, I met with Bob Sutor,
IBM's vice president of open source and standards. We discussed document
standards and the implications of ISO's controversial decision to grant
fast-track approval to Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) format."

Microsoft Interoperability Lab: ..to ensure Microsoft products support
the Open Document Format
===============================================================================================
The interoperability lab is essential to the industry in that it
encourages IT professionals and enthusiasts to explore the possibility
of interoperable technology. This will be a good venue for them to be
creative and imaginative, and to explore technology without boundaries.
