Shuttle's $199 Linux PC (News.com) [LWN.net]

News.com covers Shuttle's new KPC line of inexpensive Linux PCs that were unveiled at CES. "It'll have an Intel Celeron processor, a 945GC chipset, 512MB of memory and either a 60GB or 80GB hard drive. What it won't have: an optical drive or a PCI Express slot. Despite that, it's a pretty good-looking box, and comes in red, blue, white, and black, each with a different icon stamped on the front. This would be quite a nice basis for a simple build-your-own NAS - probably with better
cooling than a Linksys type NAS, and with x86 processor so it's much easier to run standard
Linux distros.

Power consumption could be kind of high. I looked around a few months and couldn't find any mini-itx boards with 4 SATA ports but I looked again last night and found heaps of them. The amd/intel ones had base power consumption in the 60W or more but VIA have 2 new boards out, aimed partly at NAS. The faster one is

The slower one is fanless. They're cheaper than all the other boards I found and idle at 18W - suspend with wake-on-lan is 3W I think). Presumably you pay a penalty in terms of oomph but I just want a NAS and media streamer/player so I think I've found my board.
