You are confused, or atleast your argument is.
Webmail is not a competitor to IMAP. IMAP is a "message access protocol", it is not a email-user-interface.
Thunderbird supports using IMAP for accessing the actual messages.
Many webmail-programs do too.
webmail+imap is not in any way less interoperable than thunderbird+imap.
