Eben Moglen leaving the FSF board

Eben Moglen has posted a weblog entry on what he will be doing once the GPLv3 process stops dominating his life. "As I return to teaching at Columbia I need to concentrate more of my remaining spare time and effort on the affairs of the Software Freedom Law Center, which is inevitably going to mean less involvement with the affairs of other organizations I care very much about. In particular, it’s time for me to leave the board of directors of the Free Software Foundation, where I’ve been since 2000."

Definitely. I read this news yesterday and I felt like the FSF was losing
something.

Thankfully, Mr. Moglen is going to continue legal support of free
software via SFLC.

I've always thought Mr. Moglen is a terrific speaker - the best I've
heard. I hope he continues to speak for the cause of freedom. The FSF may
have lost a great voice, but perhaps the community has not.

While he leaves board of directors, he still will be one of FSF lawyers -- through SFLC. So I don't think things will change a lot in terms of FSF legal position, it is a management of FSF that is done by the board, and being involved in day to day management isn't always good for professional work.

Rather, he will still be the FSF's chief lawyer, as head of SFLC.
