Also, Fabrice is maintainer of a number of other GPLed programs so was probably waiting until (he could afford it | he'd obviously make no money off it) when it was proprietary. i.e., it was probably not a matter of `if' but `when'.

Plus of course kqemu or no, qemu on its own is astonishingly cool and has added vastly to what my machine can do (and to debugging as well, of course, in a sense it's like being able to freeze time for tricky bugs, always hard when running on a physical CPU ;)) )

Yes - QEmu ( in all its variants - cross-arch JIT , kqemu , kvm etc. ) is a very important hacking tool. It's one of the areas I believe should get more attention due to its potential importance to Free software.

I also hope in the near future all QEmu's variants will undergo some kind of unification.
