We got an invite to be one of the founding members, but did not have enough time to investigate the details, or consult with the membership of the Gnome Foundation.

Daniel Veillard summed things up in a message to the Gnome Foundation mailing list:

Not being part of the initial announcement does not preclude cooperation in the future.
