wow, that sucks. i don't remember debian doing that, so it's weird in
ubuntu as well - being offspring and all...

Ubuntu is definitely buggier than Debian, but the discussed issue would seem to be a bug that doesn't impact everyone. I installed the same update he did, and the datestamp on my xorg.conf is still from november 2006.

There have been other issues that I've run into though, eg there was a memory leak that got introduced in a patch and fixed a week or two ago that made it impossible to run X for more than a day or two. Then there was that update last year that hosed X entirely for some people.

I wouldn't mind some better QA, but in my experience it's about as good as it gets without resorting to Debian-stable and similar, which generally start to feel pretty out of date before they're updated.

Yeah, it did not change the date!

I know it changed because my display went to hell and then I compared with my last checked in version...

Yes, Ubuntu is a lot buggier than straight Debian - probably because they rush to get stuff out, unlike Debian, who only release when there are no such bugs as, e.g., wipe out your hand crafted conf files.

Tried Ubuntu, and SuSE, and gone back to good 'ole Debian - which means on my own box I can junk KDE/Gnome and have a simple Window Manager such as FVWM and my own choice of other stuff, right from the install. Plus running a server with Debian is IMNSHO a better bet than using any other distro.

I've had Debian updates overwrite local changes to X config. Not sure if this was with Sarge or earlier, but at least for a while debconf (? or something) was installed so that by default it assumed it was in charge of the X config. There were ways of telling it not to touch parts or all of the config, but as best I recall - as I think about it, this was a while ago, must have been before Sarge - the instructions weren't where you'd naturally see them until after your hand tuned config had been blown away and you went looking for the culprit.

FWIW, I've been using Debian on both desktops and servers since about 1996, but have had nothing but Ubuntu on our desktops (and laptop) since about mid 2005. I used to say that I'd be sticking with Debian for servers, but lately I've been rethinking that, as some temporary testing setups using Ubuntu have worked really well... at least until I started messing with getting Xen setup to consolidate some services and reduce the number of fans whirring in my office at home. Maybe that's still not quite ready for general use. :-(

yeah, ubuntu has some bugs. . the adept manager only checks for updates folllowing a reboot--for users like me who leave a machine in suspend, weeks can go by . .

also, one of the kernel _updates_ whiped out many users wifi's. . . only the old kernel would work--not so good. further, after filing a bug report, months went by before i was notified by the maintainer.. really not good.

i really like many of the values ubuntu has, but the qa is very sloppy. they need a much bigger beta pond.

wishing you well.

Must be something about your setup - My main kubuntu box doesn't normally get rebooted, but the update notifier works fine - the update icon appears in the panel whenever new updates are available.

are you running edgy or dapper? i went with a long support cycle so i have avoided even trying edgy. .
