[Sorry for cross-posting. Feel free to forward around]

Torino, 07/01/2007

Due to unfortunate circumstances that we are still investigating, the
domain name "agnula.org" has been "hijacked" by an organisation with
no connection whatsoever to the former members of the AGNULA project
consortium or or to the current persons that have been and are
contributing to the AGNULA project.

The domain name "agnula.org", and all subdomains thereof, now point to
a web page which does not contain any reference to the AGNULA project.

As a temporary measure, the "agnula.info" domain name has been
registered and all the services have been configured to use such
domain.

We therefore urge all users to replace all instances of "agnula.org"
with "agnula.info" until further notice. For example:

- the website is now http://www.agnula.info/

- the mailing lists are not on http://lists.agnula.info/ and mail
  should be sent to users@lists.agnula.info,
  developers@lists.agnula.info, etc.

We are still in the process of fixing all the necessary references.
Please report any domain-related problem you may encounter to

  <info@agnula.info>

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

On behalf of the AGNULA team,

Andrea Glorioso

About AGNULA: Agnula (acronym for A GNU/Linux Audio distribution,
pronounced with a strong g) is the name of a project funded until
April 2004 by the European Commission (number of contract:
IST-2001-34879; key action IV.3.3, Free Software: towards the critical
mass). After the end of the funded period, AGNULA is continuing as a
volunteer based project, aiming to spread Libre Software in the
professional audio/video arena.

Fix references... Like the signature ?

Looks like the link on the LWN front page does not work either. Need to add www. in front of agnula.info.

Weird...that link did work when the article was posted. Now it seems to want the www., so I added it.

I don't know how appropriate it is, but it is related.

Obvously Agnula is designed to repackage existing distributions (in this case Debian for Demudi) to make them more suitable for multimedia work.

A sort of commercial flake off this project is something called '64studio' which is a commercial distribution doing the same thing (completely Free software) for Debian Etch.

It retains a high degree of compatability with Debian and I was able to do both upgrade from 64Studio's 1.0 release to current Etch and, on a seperate install, use 64studio's packages without issue on Etch and Sid.

This is very nice, IMO.

I applaud Agnula also.. A great deal of the packages they have created seem to now be a part of Debian Etch and their efforts have substantially enriched Debian as a whole as a multimedia/audio workstation OS.

(now if only Debian could upgrade their PAM to support the rtlimits stuff. (I know that's it's very difficult and unerstand the issues around it and debian (somwhat)))

Can you clarify what do you mean by "commercial"?

Is 64studio as free as Agnula, but with a company supporting it?

(or does it add non-free packages?)

Commercial in this case means professional support for it. If you pay for it your paying the developers to work on it and you can get support from them.

So it's like Redhat in that manner, but they do provide no-cost downloads of their binaries.

I don't know how associated this company is with 64studio, but I found this that may be interesting to people.

It's called a 'Mediastation keyboard'. It's a fancy midi controller with embedded PC hardware that runs Linux. I expect that it's something you can use to generate music, use live, use in the studio, and also as a controller for all sorts of different devices.

This kind of thing has to be solved. The whole problem roots to the fact that the namespace is owned by the the named entity rather than by the user of the name.

Instead of a hierarchy of names to be sold and bought by the highest bidder names should be managed in some p2p way so that usefull names can't be hijacked by useless entities.

I guess DUNDi[1] is a start. Anyone know of some research in this area?
