gedit is the official text editor of GNOME

While aiming at simplicity and ease of use, gedit is a powerful general
purpose text editor.

Among others, it features full UTF-8 support, syntax highlighting and a
powerful plugin system.

gedit 2.17.1 is a the first release of the 2.17 development series.
Despite being part of a development series it should be stable.

There weren't any major changes (see below for a detailed list), the
most notable thing is that the spell plugin now uses the enchant library
and the iso-codes package: distros should update the dependencies in
their package.
