Linux Journal and IDG World Expo Announce Winners of Product Excellence Awards [LWN.net]

Linux Journal and IDG World Expo have announced the winners of the Product Excellence Awards. "The Linux Journal Product Excellence Awards distinguish product and service innovations by LinuxWorld exhibitors and are divided into 13 categories, including an overall Best of Show award. "All of the judges were very impressed by the nominations we received, it was a very difficult decision. Weve seen many new innovations, and improvements on old favorites," commented Linux Journal Products Editor and Product Excellence Awards judge James Gray."

What I would like, is to know the rationale behind the choices, just so the non-winners can improve. Especially as it seems to me a lot of not-so-open products are on this list...

My reading of the article says that the possible candidate pool was limited to exhibitors at LinuxWorld. Cynically speaking, it smells of some sort of buy-your-award-here deal.

"I'd just like to let you know that you've been nominted for Distro of the Year ... I presume you'll be wanting a table for ten? ... $10,000, yes ... Excellent, I look forward to shaking your hand at the awards dinner!"

Of course, it would be a little unfortunate if an organisation won and nobody was there to pick it up in person. But, for some strange quirk of nature, this never happens.
