Intel has an obvious interest in supporting customers with a variety of needs. User Mode Linux has made it possible for me to share the cost of a physical hosted server with other low-budget VM users with similar needs. Chances are that none of us would have rented a complete server on our own. This represents business for Intel and AMD that would not otherwise exist. I am also currently specifying a few grands worth of hardware for students I teach which is intended to run UML or Xen - with UML being the simpler and quicker to implement VM technology. Either way, this physical server would have no purpose without low cost VM technology. Dropping the price point on being able to run a hosted server means that a lot more people can do this for many more purposes than previously - creating a whole new market segment for Intel's products.
