Mandriva Linux 2006 Release Candidate 1 released
Since the last newsletter, beta 3 has been and gone, and now Mandriva
Linux 2006 RC1 is available! Many bugs have been fixed during the
beta cycle. Significantly, RC1 should now boot properly on Intel and
AMD dual-core processors. Other notable improvements (since both 2005
and earlier 2006 betas) include big improvements to the drakroam
wireless roaming tool and the new interactive firewall, and a
significantly faster boot process. Thanks to the replacement of
hotplug with udev functions, all machines now boot faster. Old
machines benefit the most, with one user reporting a three minute
reduction in time to boot. Your humble editor's machine now boots 30
seconds faster than under Mandriva Linux 2005 LE. Experience the
improvements of Mandriva Linux 2006 and help make the final release
more solid than ever - download today!

Application Of The Unspecified Time Period
In a new feature suggested by one of your humble editor's beloved
bosses, every issue we'll be bringing to your attention one of the
many useful applications available in Mandriva Linux which you may
not be aware of. This issue, we're featuring easytag. If you have a
lot of music files on your computer and you want to organise them
quickly and accurately, easytag is a great help. It edits the tags in
MP3, Ogg Vorbis and other audio files which contain the name of the
artist, the song, the album and other information. With a multitude
of features for quickly retagging multiple files, normalising file
names and other useful functions, you can tear through your
collection. Having organised tags makes music library applications
like Rhythmbox and amaroK much more functional, as well! easytag is
in the 'contrib' urpmi media which contains packages contributed by
volunteers, so you may find it on your Powerpack or commercial
Limited Edition 2005 release. If you don't, you can use the Mandriva
Club urpmi helper page or Easy URPMI to set up an urpmi contrib media
for your version of Mandriva, and then install easytag with urpmi or
rpmdrake. Try it today!

Mandriva in the news

Mandriva Limited Edition 2005 reviewed by PCW
PCW, one of the UK's leading computing magazines, has published its
review of Mandriva Limited Edition 2005. PCW has always been a strong
supporter of Linux, publishing reviews of all the major distributions
and a monthly tips page, so we're happy to see that they were pleased
with our latest release. Here's some of their comments: "This modern
Linux distribution is a far cry from the early versions. Mandriva is
well suited to the Linux newcomer and the selection of software
available offers far more than could be installed on a Windows-based
PC. This is too good a package to relegate to a spare PC for
occasional use and you won't regret making the switch." If you don't
have your copy of LE 2005 yet, you can buy it at the Mandriva Store
or you can join the Club today and download the full commercial
version!

Tuxmachines looks at Mandriva 2006 RC1
Once again, Tuxmachines is first out of the gates with a look at the
latest Mandriva pre-release. It has a nice look at smart (the new
alternative package management tool available in 2006), kat (the
desktop search tool) and some of the new graphics, so if you're
interested in a little preview before you take a look at 2006 RC1 for
yourself, head over and have a read!
