Look closely.

1M-cache PentiumM vs Celeron, DVD-RW vs DVD, etc

But you can get the same machine cheaper with XP

Also, the first price quoted does not include taxes; with VAT it's 469 GBP = 695 Euro. More in line with the configuration.

This is incredibly good news. Although (based on my understanding of Mandriva's press release) this is targeted for Europeans, it represents a paradigm shift towards giving consumers a choice in which operating system they can purchase with a computer. I still dream of a day when anybody can walk into a big box retail store and see a selection of computers with more than just one OS available (and no, Windows XP Home, Pro, and Media Center DON'T count as three choices!).

Kudos to Mandriva and Dell.

Who still remembers this:

After that announcement, Dell (obviously) got a phone call from Redmond, after which they were quick to announce that they are not at all selling laptops with Linux preloaded, that this was just a random Italian company who happened to use Dell laptops to independently do just that. Let's see if they stick with this announcement after tomorrow. If they do, they've gotten bolder.
