The Perfect Setup - Mandrake/Mandriva 10.2

Falko Timme has published a how-to article with detailed information on setting up a server on a Mandriva 10.2 system. "This is a detailed description about the steps to be taken to setup a Mandrake 10.2 based server that offers all services needed by ISPs and hosters (web server (SSL-capable), mail server (with SMTP-AUTH and TLS!), DNS server, FTP server, MySQL server, POP3/IMAP, Quota, Firewall, etc.). In addition to that I will show how to use Debian's package manager apt on an rpm-based system because it takes care of package dependencies automagically which can save a lot of trouble."

The Perfect Setup - Mandrake/Mandriva 10.2

My experience with Mandrake on the server (using the libraries) has not been very positive.

I've maintained a Mandrake server from 9.0 to 10.2. Apart from the many required upgrades due to the one year support policy, I've suffered several upgrade failures. 2 cvs upgrades, many configuration files rewritten (inc. sendmail), services stopped, etc... Each upgrade has required me several hours of work and downtime. In the same time I've got a Debian server that has been running for more than 5 years and upgraded twice fully without any serious issue.

Mandrake is good. On the desktop. I'll stick to Debian when it comes to servers.
