Mozilla, netscape, konqueror, opera can all handle email with no problem, and always have. But linux users running firefox are out of luck. Of course, if you happen to be running gnome, or have evolution installed and configured and running, it just might work. But I have neither, and I will have a hard time convincing Aunt Mildred to use firefox on her new kde desktop as well. Editing the "about:config" is fraught with frustration and raises more question than it answers for poor Aunt Mildred. "Oh Dear, I'm trying to type "/usr/bin/thunderbird" in this "boolean field" and it won't let me! I messed up somehow and now there's a new variable called "/usr/bin/thunderbird" and I can't get rid of it!" They have some pretty obscure stuff, like "move system caret on focus change," that could be move to about:config to make room if they are concerned about Edit->Preferences getting too cluttered. Just *installing* anything on Linux is harder than configuring Firefox mailto handling. Honestly, for pretty much *every single user* of Firefox on Linux who isn't an uber geek, they are getting Firefox preinstalled and preconfigured with their OS. Firefox mailto: stuff should work fine on every single distro that packages Firefox out of the box. If it doesn't, complain to the distro engineers, not the Firefox engineers. There should *not* be more options added to Firefox. These kinds of integration things really need to become automatic. If you are the kind of person who swaps around their email client every month and finds that they need to change this option often, perhaps your energies would be better spent helping to define a standard method to invoke the user's default mail client so that Firefox could get the integration with zero effort, like it does on Windows.
