VA Linux Business Forum a Spirited Success in Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan, July. 05, 2005 - (JCN Newswire) - The VA Linux Business
Forum was held last week at the Akasaka Prince Hotel, Tokyo. Organized by
VA Linux Systems Japan, the forum was composed of a Business session on
June 22, and an OSS Technical session on June 23. The Forum is recognized
as the leading symposium in Japan centering on the technical capabilities
of open source software based on the Linux kernel from VA Linux.

This year the forum sought to explore the continuing growth of VA Linux as
a technology source, present current business conditions and the
directions of VA Linux partner companies as the core businesses driving
the Linux and Open Source movement, as well as introduce new technologies
and solutions essential to the enterprise market built from the Linux
kernel level upward.

The forum also sponsored a Linux Kernel Discussion for Young Kernel
Technologists (U33). In light of the few opportunities recently for Linux
Kernel technologists to get together, the forum was particularly pleased
to gather some of the younger technologists together at one conference for
a free discussion and exchange of opinions, and offer an opportunity for
announcements related to Linux Kernel implementations and future
directions.


Key presentations included:

I. 'The Strategy of VA Linux and its Role in the Open Source Movement'
Tetsuya Ueda,

VA Linux Systems Japan

In recent years in Japan, the flow of Open Source has become sufficiently
steady and, due to the development methods and penetration of the
approach, business models have moved from being mainly license-fee based,
to consultancy-format business models providing highly technically
skilled, high-value-added solutions. The key-note presentation of the
event gave commentary and a look at the future of business models and how
they are changing due to the open source movement. Also discussed were the
human resource development activities and the licensing and other
strategies at VA Linux in its role as a promoter of the Open Source
Movement in Japan.


II. 'The Approach of the NTT Group to Open Source'

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT Corporation)

The NTT Group is using and supporting open source software in various
areas including the enterprise and communications fields. This
presentation introduced some of the aims of open source software use in
the NTT Group, and gave some examples of where it has been used.


III. 'The MySQL Solution of Sumisho Computer Systems'

Sumisho Computer Systems Corporation (SCS Corporation)

This presentation introduced the use of OSS at Sumisho Computer Systems
Corporation. Sumisho pays particular attention to DBMS, which are
invariably required in business systems, and developments promoting
penetration of MySQL, the most popular open source DBMS. Also discussed
were the status of activities toward an open stack, which includes MySQL,
and some of Sumisho's MySQL-based solutions. Finally, some of the
technical features of MySQL not yet well-known in Japan and the new "MySQL
Cluster" functionality were introduced.


IV. 'Mission-critical System Applications and the New Linux "PRIMEQUEST"
Server'
Toshihiro Kishimoto

Use of Linux for mission critical systems is rapidly expanding. Last
April, Fujitsu announced the mainframe class "PRIMEQUEST" backbone IA
server as one of PRIMEQUEST's backbone Linux System solutions. This
presentation introduced the PRIMEQUEST concept, and the adoption of
backbone system architectures using Linux.


V. 'Special Session for OSS Roundup'
Members participating in roundup were:

This was an open and frank discussion with five observers of various
activities within the open source community, and based on questions and
problems submitted beforehand on various topics related to Open Source
business, culture and technology. This symposium took on the name of a
"roundup"; a session of meeting, gathering, synthesizing and summarizing,
as well as considering the ideas of mobilizing and scraping-together, and
also less-positive nuances such as those of capturing and "resolving of
differences forcefully". An interesting and spirited discussion!


VI. 'Improvement of MTA, POP, and IMAP for Large-scale Use and SPAM
Measures'

When building a large-scale mail system based on open-source software, it
is necessary to sift through all of the functions in a multitude of
packages to select the right one. For example, when choosing an MTA, each
of Postfix, Exim, Sendmail and Qmail have choices to be made for every
different situation. In addition, if the software does not implement all
of the required functionality, or is not up-to-date, it must be modified.
This session, as a practical example, explained the improvements made to
MTA, POP, and IMAP in creating the VA Flex Messaging Solution. Also
discussed were SPAM countermeasures and protocols oriented towards ISPs.


VII. 'Composition of Extensions for VA Directory of OpenLDAP'

This presentation introduced some of the extensions and problem
resolutions that are required when implementing a large scale LDAP server
using OpenLDAP. The "VA Directory", an LDAP directory server product based
on OpenLDAP that provides high reliability, usability, extendibility and
maintainability, was also introduced. The resulting benefits in reduced
management costs and increased system operating efficiency were also
discussed.


VIII. 'Debian GNU/Linux and VA Core Evolutions for Enterprise'

Debian GNU/Linux is a Linux distribution developed on a volunteer basis.
Debian's high usability has been shown recently with the attention
received by distributions such as Knoppix and Ubuntu, which are derived
from Debian GNU/Linux. This presentation explained some characteristics of
Debian GNU/Linux, and enterprise-oriented customizations made to it to
create VA Core.


IX. '2.6 Linux Kernel Bottlenecks'
Isaku Yamahata,

The Linux 2.6 kernel has been tuned for enterprise applications, but there
remain several areas where further development can still be undertaken.
This presentation discussed these bottlenecks and methods for kernel
tuning in light of them.


X. Linux Kernel Symposium with Younger Kernel Engineers (U33)

With rare opportunity for newer Linux Kernel technologists to get
together, this session will gather younger technologists together for a
free discussion, exchange of opinion and platform for announcements
regarding Linux Kernel implementations and future directions. As a group
of experienced Kernel developers from VA Linux hosted, providing topics to
prompt the discussion, the result was an informative session for the less
experienced kernel developers.
