Hello all,

64 Studio Ltd. is a company developing a collection of software for
digital content creation on x86_64 hardware (that's AMD's 64-bit CPUs
and Intel's EM64T chips). It's based on the pure 64 port of Debian
GNU/Linux, but with a specialised package selection and lots of other
customisations.

Like to see the work in progress? You can now download an iso image
for version 0.2.0 alpha. This will install Debian Pure 64 with X.org,
the Gnome desktop and an initial selection of creative applications
including music, graphics and publishing tools.

Please note that there is no low-latency kernel package included in
this version, and that this release is provided for testing only.

Problems in this release include wrongly configured apt sources,
useful packages missing or not installed by default, confusing menus
and assorted warnings during installation. There are probably plenty
of other things wrong with it as well, which is why we're calling
this an alpha release. But it does actually install and run on our
Opteron test hardware, so it's a start : )

Needless to say, anyone who is interested in getting involved with the
64 Studio project is most welcome. Our aim is to create a
distribution with full (but completely optional) commercial support,
which will generate revenue to pay free software developers.

Cheers!

Daniel

Ok, raise hands everyone who don't think "test version of 64 Studio" when they read "Alpha version of 64 Studio" :)

You'd be most welcome to give it a go. We have a mailing list available
for any suggestions you might have. In particular, running Ingo Molnar's
real-time premption patches on x86_64 seems to be uncharted territory, so
we're going to need as much testing of that as possible after 2.6.12 comes
out.

Now that the Sarge release has happened, we're going to be following the
x86_64 port of Debian testing for the main part of the distribution, with
packages not available there added as required. I'm writing an article
about 64 Studio for the June 23rd edition of LWN, but in the meantime if
you have any questions, please send them to the mailing list:

Cheers!
