Hello.

Some of you noticed that the Linux Weekly News, aka lwn.net, changed to a
subscription model for full access, and wondered if Debian developers could
arrange some sort of group access.

I'm pleased to report that the answer is yes! LWN offered to treat Debian
developers as a group, and HP offered to fund Debian's subscription fee. My
thanks to both for their continuing support of the Debian development
community!

Here's how it works. If you're a Debian developer and you want full LWN
access, go to lwn.net and create an account for yourself. Then, send email to

	lwn-subscription@debian.org

containing your LWN account name. Sign this email with your key on the
Debian keyring. Then, exercise patience. Eventually, I or a delegate will
process your request, adding you to the "Debian Project group" at LWN using
the account management interface at lwn.net.

I need a volunteer or two to respond to requests from Debian developers for
access. If you're a Debian developer with time, interest in helping, and a
little tolerance for dealing with the web-based account management interface
at lwn.net, please let me know.

Thank you for your time.

Bdale

This is good news indeed, and in my opinion at least, makes HP gain at least a few of the sympathy points again that they lost after firing Bruce Perens.

Where do I send the thank you note?

LWN has always been my favorite Free Software news source; it has real quality and editorial integrity. So, to LWN staff, my thanks for all your hard work.

Now, who at HP can I send a note of appreciation to?

Cool!

Hmm...is there a limit as to how small comments you can create?

I tried to post a comment that said just "Cool!" and I got this error:

Below that, it corretly showed my comment?!

This is great! LWN just got a huge boost, considering the number of Debian developers out there. Glad to hear that HP is willing to fund a group subscription.

Thanks, HP!

Somewhat related, I just purchased a used HP 9000 system on which I'll install Debian . This will help with me sort out the problems with some of my packages that don't currently compile correctly on HP's PA-RISC CPU.

Alternately, if you're a Debian developer, there are a couple of HPPA machines you can access - paer.d.o and sarti.d.o. sarti is the newer and faster of the two, but paer's still pretty good - I remember testing a KDE build error on that. paer's also listed as "All" access, so you could probably get access to it if you asked lamont/willy/admin@d.o.
