" Totally irrelevant to my complaint! "

eh?!... if its not that the inovation in the Desktop point to 3D all arround then may be is irrelevant, but you're wrong because it isn't... but then why complein about X and GUI bloat as above ??

" It is what happends in the data structures and code behind the visible elements that is problem. Unnecessary window repaints "

You can't see properly the 3D acceleration hardware elements, specialy with the complexity involved in modern GPUs, then is nothing but to expect that code that touches 3D and even X subsystems trend more and more to be clumbsy and bloated.

" Yes, it is tolerable on >500Mhz >128Mb machines, but still often feels sluggish at times on 600Mhz (as does Gnome and KDE) "

??... belive one of your bigger problem is that you are in a dire need of a much powerfull machine, and apart but perhaps of more concern a much more powerfull GPU, not for mozilla but for more modern looking applications.
