" And would guarantee GUI applications be even slower and memory consuming than today's bloatware...
...Even today I feel that at some point the X11-based GUIs have taken a seriously wrong turn. "

The same old whinning. Todays GPU are bigger than the CPU. Just look at the specs for playstation3, 1.8TFlops!!! http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20050516_223209.html
And if that isn't enough then there is always the possibility of joing several GPU togheter !!! http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20050520_153522.html

The problem is not bloat, but complexity. Because as graphics technologies got better Linux/OSS stayed behind because of a short sited 'hardware device driver policy' that caused Linux drivers drag behind, And even if there are drivers from the major vendors, Nvidia and ATI, they are not as good as the Windows counterpart, and worst those vendor make a pou-pou of the followed official kernel policy. For other vendors, why even bother to buy a $100 graphic board if you can only use $50, under Linux?!!

As to speed, the Mozilla interface with which i'm righting this comment, is not slow. If it's sloweer than Gnome or KDE, one hardly notice, and with something close to 1,8TFlops no one ever will. And a form of XUL can be optimized to work with C/C++ toolkits with a very minimal overhead... me thinks so.

So what is missing is *political* will, because the technical argument don't stick.
