When I started reading the article, I got the impression that there's going to be some really nice point about binary compatibility and the like. But, no luck.
I'm not sure why the author is so pissed off with various RPM builds. When I look at Dag's repository (http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/), it appears that he alone builds 37,922 RPMS for 2,146 different projects, spanning Red Hat Enterprise Linux (2.1, 3 and 4), Fedora Core (1, 2, and 3) and Red Hat Linux (6.2, 7.3, 8.0 and 9), for i386 and x86_64. If he can pull this off, all by his lonesome, a company should have no problems doing a few. No? Especially given the fact that many are simple recompiles obtained by rpmbuild --rebuild.
It's just a matter of time before we see more unification in terms of binary compatibility and packaging. Linux as a consumer, even enterprise desktop is a relatively new thing. Things will get simpler in time, but they are not too bad even now.
