Binary Releases

I've installed many commercial applications that do not require the amount of multiple releases exampled in this article. I guess the drawback is that these binaries are not always integrated with the system package manager. But most of these are simple user installations.
Examples? Skype, Crossover, Doom3, Unreal Tournament, Teamspeak, Maya, Renderman...
The list goes on and on for otherwise closed applications that are not busy providing so many binaries. If it is too much trouble, try looking into the tools like Autopackage.org which are trying to support the environments of a single binary running on many distros.
