To me, Java has always seemed like the answer to the question "What is a Perl programmer to do who does not wish to share his source code?". Free software does not have the same portability issues that proprietary software suffers from, or at least it should not. It seems to me that too much effort is made in free software projects in working with proprietary software. I guess it makes sense for the mono project in providing tools to help companies migrate to free software platforms, but I don't understand putting such an effort in implementing java components in openoffice.
