Part of the current pain of installing the AMD64 is the need to break into a shell and edit the apt sources by hand. Apt is unable to configure itself properly in this architecture. Now that the AMD64 tree is moving off alioth, will the installer be adjusted so apt works?

You don't have to edit the sources.list by hand. Just follow the instructions in de HOWTO: https://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian...

But as long as the AMD64 port isn't an official part of Debian you have to use the AMD64 mirrors, altough many mirrors have already included the port.

No need to get a shell -- when the installer asks you to choose a mirror, simply select the option to enter mirror details manually (it's at the top of the list, so you may have to scroll up) and enter the mirror URL (http://amd64.debian.net/debian/ in this case)

Yes, that is one of the few packages that will be different between Debian propert and amd64.debian.net.
