So does this mean that I'll be able to play music on xmms (not that xmms is an excellent music player, just the least sucky atm) and still be able to get application beeps? Even Windows 95 could do that. My el cheepo sound blaster card seems to provide 32 channels of sound mixing yet I still can't have system alerts and music!
(And I don't want to have some temperamental daemon that only works properly with 4 applications, introduces a half second delay and stutters. We all just switched to using ALSA, lets not change again. :)
While I'm grumping, programs should fade sound out smoothly when quitting mid-noise; there needs to be a better, standardised interface for selecting input/output/loopback devices within the program; standardised beep protocol so simple programs can make something other than pc beeps; and some nice alert sounds to play that are non-confrontational or abrasive.
Yes, I'm aware that my complaints are not directly the fault of the sound crew, my point is that having a professional sound system is all very nice, but the reality is that average users still fight with the system, and people who try to use prepackaged systems like demudi still have to fight to record a basic stereo signal. There is a long way to go.
