If it doesn't open in Emacs, it's not worth reading!

(Besides, if you do have to open a word file for some reason, you can use the very good wvWare tools from wvware.sourceforge.net. Command-line tools that convert MSWord files into lots of nifty things!)

IIRC, Abiword uses wv/wvware internally for it's Word/RTF filters.
