Compiler Talks Focused on JIT

Posted Sep 17, 2026 18:50 UTC (Thu) by gmatht (subscriber, #58961) [Link]

I noticed that the optimisation talks focussed on JIT, but there seems to be room for improvement in the Ahead-of-Time compilation of Python as well. The common AoT compiler for Python seems to still be Cython, however Cython needs explicit type annotations. The Optimising Transpiler otranspiler didn't need explicit type annotations to get MIMEcroft.sh running in JavaScript at 60FPS@4K, so I thought I would brush up the Python frontend for otranspiler.

Currently otranspiler can transpile simple Python examples into Cython, as well as JavaScript, C and Rust. This is a long way from being a general Python transpiler, but I am confident that I could get it to support python reasonably well within a year. (and hopeful that this would move it closer to being a general purpose transpiler rather just be endless "if python" blocks)

Although modern JITs are basically magic, I would think that it would be easier for static analysis to determine whether a Python list should be encoded as a physical array, vector or B-tree etc. since by the time the JIT kicks in the lists would be likely to be already have data.
