A note on subscription prices from LWN

The online publication industry, as a whole, is struggling, with challenges coming from multiple directions. Thanks to the support of all of you, our readers, LWN would appear to be doing better than most. But the world has changed around us and, in particular, prices have changed considerably. By now, you probably know where this is going: subscription prices at LWN will be increasing as of September 15.

We adopted the subscription model in late 2002; it was one of the best decisions we have ever made. This model makes us independent of the volatile (and surveillance-driven) advertising market and aligns our interests with those of our readers. But it does depend on support from those readers; if you have not yet subscribed to LWN, please consider doing so now — our subscribers are the only reason we continue to exist.

We have only increased prices twice in the 24 years since adopting this model; the last increase was in early 2022, nearly five years ago. That increase helped to keep us on a stable footing, and a lot more besides. We were able to hire Daroc Alden and Joe Brockmeier, and they have greatly increased the depth and range of our coverage. The LWN site has been improved in a number of ways, with features like articles in EPUB format, markdown formatting for comments, the kernel source database, full-text email and RSS feeds, dark-mode support, the public topic list, and more. A lot of effort has also gone into keeping the site alive, responsive, and reader-friendly in the face of escalating scraper attacks.

Since the 2022 price change, according to the undoubtedly reliable numbers from the US government, consumer-price inflation has added up to almost exactly 20%. Some costs (health insurance, naturally) have gone up rather more than that. We will be matching the inflation number, though, and increase prices by approximately 20%; the new monthly prices will be:

LevelPrice
Starving hacker$6.00
Professional hacker$11.00
Project leader$19.00
Maniacal supporter$55.00

Prices for group subscriptions will be increased by the same amount.

All subscriptions purchased ahead of the change will remain valid through the original expiration date. The policy for individual monthly subscriptions is a little different this time; all monthly subscriptions that were active before this announcement went out will be charged at the old rate for the following six months. Reminders will be sent out to monthly subscribers before the new rates take effect.

There are few things we like less than raising prices, which is why we have done it so rarely. It would be far better to keep LWN as inexpensive as possible and make it up in volume. Subscriber growth has stalled, though, in recent years, making that strategy unworkable for now. We are working on schemes to bring in more subscribers again, but that is a long-term process; getting there requires some short-term help.

In January, LWN will begin its 30th year of publication. There is really only one reason why we are still here and vital after all that time: it is because our readers have always supported us. There are not many people who have had the good fortune to write for such a loyal community, and we are deeply grateful for it. Thank you, as always, for supporting LWN.

Thank you all for creating such an informative and entertaining resource. Personally I’m happy to pay the increased price.

That said, I’m going to soapbox a bit: I think it would have been nice if the title of the article said it was a price increase. Vague titles for bad news are standard in corporate communications, but to me they feel… obfuscatory. Perhaps the goal is to set an apologetic or personal tone, but I think it better respects the reader’s time to make the title a useful summary of the article.

But this is basically just an aesthetic preference of mine; I wouldn’t be surprised if others see things differently. I’m not claiming that my time was wasted: I would have read the article either way. :)

Having worked at Google, I worried after reading the title that LWN would be shutting down. Glad it's merely a price increase.

The main page contained a blurb that made it fairly obvious what was coming.

My subscription lapsed recently. I will resubscribe after 15 September.

> I will resubscribe after 15 September.

I must admit that I am a lazy resubscriber. Sometimes weeks and months pass until I do it. It does not help that I read LWN typically in bed on a FOSS device, that my banking is incompatible with. And many articles I note via subscriber links in my feeds anyway.

When reading this now I got out of bed and renewed immediately, so we have a win win. The nickel nurser in me can be happy having got the old price. And LWN avoided my ordinary renewal delay.

On an unrelated note: Typing the expiry date of my payment card renewed last week I noted, it must be the first time I type a year number starting with 3. 2038 is getting dangerously close...

I was also worried about the "Vague title" not because I thought it was obfuscatory but because I, like others, thought you might be closing but also that your cancer might have returned. So I will be renewing my (very lapsed) subscription after 15 Sept in celebration of both, particularly the latter. And thank you, to all of you.

Thank you

There are few other subscriptions I have where I could be more willing to accept price increases - simply because the content LWN creates is honest, original and independent. Please continue on your path, and don't worry too much about raising your price moderately every now and then. Everyone does it, so why shouldn't LWN?

No shrinkflation with LWN!

Very happy to pay the increased rate! lwn.net, unlike so many other things, has not indulged in shrinkflation [1] since its last price increase but has instead *increased* the depth and variety of its content. Well done!

LWN - one of two respectable sites on the WWW :)

The Beowulf mailing list and its archive is exemplary in terms of wide knowledge and *real* expertise in a small number of subject matter experts: LWN is the other worthwhile site I'd recommend to anyone to study as a good example of curated content backed up with real knowledge (and quality journalism).

Keep on keeping on, please.

You've had my back when I couldn't afford. I'll try.

I'd like to echo what the others have said here: I'm more than happy to pay the increased price. I'm incredibly glad journalism like yours can still exist today, skillfully covering topics I care deeply about. With great insights & deep respect, humorous and knowledgeable. I have always been and will continue to be a proud supporter of LWN.

A big thank you to the members of the community here as well. While comment sections can get off-topic, can get a bit personal at times, it's nothing compared to the cesspool of most other comment sections out there. Most of the time it's quite the opposite: respectful discussions, technically well-founded, including a lot of prominent of various fields & projects I very much admire. So again, thank y'all!

Well worth the new price

Strong agreement. There are only two journals I would go hungry rather than skip, and this is one of them. Simply irreplaceable.

Glad to support such fantastic content

I stumbled on lwn.net way back when I first got interested in Linux, maybe some time in 99 or so. The first web site I ever published on a modem land line included a Tux penguin reading LWN linking to this site. It has been an absolute pleasure to have such high quality content to read on a daily basis.

As has been mentioned above, my initial fear when I read the title was that you were going to shutdown or something, that would have broken my heart for sure.

I'll be upping my subscription level after September 15 to help maximize what is a nominal fee for such high quality content!

Keep up the good work.

Glad to support such fantastic content

Credit card

Posted Sep 1, 2026 23:09 UTC (Tue) by cesarb (subscriber, #6266) [Link]

LWN was the first site I used my credit card on back when I first got a credit card (it took me some time before finally deciding to get one, since local payment methods like boleto bancário mean you only really need a credit card for foreign websites), and I kept renewing it since then. I have no intention of stopping, even though using a credit card to pay on a web site can be a pain (you never know when the bank will randomly decide to reject a payment, requiring you to phone to unblock the card and then retry the payment on the site).

The only thing stopping me from subscribing, even with the price increase, is that I prefer to pay in cryptocurrency.

If there are issues with the environmental impact of proof-of-work mining, there are many alternatives that use proof-of-stake algorithms that do not have a negative environmental impact (and surely are less economically unethical than, say, Paypal).

This was also one reason why I kept reading without subscribing here for years. Cryptocurrencies should be the natural payment method for free software projects, though I also admit their image has been tarnished in recent years; besides the environmental issues, there have been political and financial developments that go completely against the original ideals of "freedom currencies".

I also understand that adding new payment methods may be a nontrivial undertaking for a small website/team, regardless of what they personally think of the methods.

Alternate payment methods

Posted Sep 2, 2026 12:40 UTC (Wed) by daroc (editor, #160859) [Link]

Yes, the difficulty of implementing it has been the thing holding us back. I looked into what it would take for us to accept Monero after the last time cryptocurrency came up in the comments, and, unfortunately, it would require either setting up a whole new backend service and integrating it into our credit-card-handling hooks or evaluating and choosing one of the many (variously trustworthy) companies that promise to handle it for you.

It definitely can be done, we just haven't gotten to it yet. With several people expressing their desire to subscribe with cryptocurrency in these comments, maybe we should move the priority up the list.

At the risk of starting an off-topic line of discussion, I do want to point out that that proof-of-stake algorithms have no problematic environmental impacts, unlike the proof-of-work algorithms of e.g. Bitcoin. I like Monero personally (although it's PoW not PoS) because it does not have that problematic political ultra-capitalist usage where people use it heavily for speculation.

Don't proof-of-stake systems encourage the mass hoarding of storage hardware? While nowhere near as bad proof-of-work, that is not of zero environmental consequence (presuming they became popular). I'm quite out of the loop these days, though, I may be misinformed. If it does require lots of storage, presumably the squeeze caused by the AI industry has caused interesting things to happen there...

I think you are referring to proof of capacity. The stake in proof of stake refers to the holdings of the cryptocurrency, like "table stakes" in poker.

Keep up the great work.

At a time that we are being inundated by AI-generated content at varying quality levels (some is good, most is not), having a quality human-written news source with deep technical content is incredibly important.

I've been a quiet reader for many years, but I hardly every post. I'm definitely one of the "silent consumers", but please keep up the good work.

This site makes excellent training material for AIs, so I hope that those companies are in your corporate sponsor lists. If they aren't, they should be!

There are very, very few news/article outlets that I have actually actively followed almost daily for any long periods of time. Come to think of it, I think LWN is probably the only one I've consistently checked almost daily for the past decades. Also, I don't like bragging much, but I have to admit that one of the things I'm secretly proud of is that my LWN user ID is a low 3-digit number -- though I'm secretly jealous of anyone with a 2-digit ID ;)

From my point of view, whatever it is that you guys deem is necessary to keep this running is something that requires little justification.

I read it similarly, not as far as "we're going to shut down completely", but my initial reading was along the lines of "there's something unfortunate that's going on we have to tell you all". Then I read the article and thought "oh good, it's just a modest price increase, nothing bad is happening" and my heart rate went right back down. :-)

The Smarties Test makes it seem as though Theory of Mind is pretty binary - your toddler doesn't "get it" but your school kid does - but in reality it's not easy to remember that although the other humans are people "like" you they aren't as much "like" you as all that. You will always know things they do not and vice versa. This makes title writing all the trickier because to you the title is redundant - you already know the entire content, it doesn't need a title.

The new title is much better, thanks. And, of course, thanks for years of service, we haven't always agreed about everything but you've done a great job.

By contrast, the quality of LWN articles is a constant reminder that "if it's free, then you are the product". Sadly, that contrast is becoming rarer and rarer. Please hang in there, we need you.

> Some costs (health insurance, naturally) have gone up rather more than that.

*sigh*, please don't mention that again... please don't remind us that a significant fraction of (world wide) subscriptions has to go to this insurance racket unique across all rich countries. Too depressing; ignorance is bliss.

Any ancestor with a different nationality maybe? :-)

So you'd prefer OHIP? Let's run the numbers.

If you're in the US, about 7%-8% of payroll will go to employer-paid health insurance premiums. If you're in Ontario, 1%-2% of payroll will go to the Employer Health Tax, and another 5%-13% will go to withholding for employee provincial income taxes, much of which then funds OHIP.

After payroll, when the employee goes to actually spend his salary, 13% of his purchases will go to national plus provincial sales taxes. Much of those sales taxes go to fund, you guessed it, OHIP.

Waving a magic wand and having the government provide services doesn't make those services free, man. Part of LWN's payroll would be going to fund healthcare for its employees no matter where those employees happen to live. The only difference is whether the amount siphoned off for that is invisible, like in Ontario, or is disclosed honestly as a dedicated line item, like in the US.

If it's free, then you are the product

Posted Sep 8, 2026 8:29 UTC (Tue) by NAR (subscriber, #1313) [Link]

An other difference is that if it's state-supplied healthcare funded by tax, it might happen that people earning less are paying less but get the same benefits as people paying more. However, if the taxes are too low, the state-funded healthcare might get quite lousy and the people with more money use private healthcare for better (or simply more timely) service.

If it's free, then you are the product

Posted Sep 8, 2026 8:41 UTC (Tue) by taladar (subscriber, #68407) [Link] (3 responses)

It is quite dishonest on your part to suggest that all taxes paid on both income and sales are used to fund healthcare exclusively.

Besides, more rigorous studies than your back of the envelope calculation have concluded that people in the US pay about twice as much on healthcare as everyone else.

If it's free, then you are the product

Posted Sep 8, 2026 19:19 UTC (Tue) by linuxrocks123 (subscriber, #34648) [Link] (2 responses)

Of course we spend more on healthcare per capita. We're a bunch of fatasses:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_obesit...

3/4 of Americans are fatasses versus only 1/4 of Canadians. Fatasses have a _LOT_ more health problems. You don't think MAYBE that might have more to do with our increased per capita healthcare spend than "gr33dy 1n5ur4nc3 c0mp4n135?"

Astoundly, as far as I can tell, NO ONE doing these per capita healthcare spending comparisons has ever bothered to try to normalize by percentage of fatasses -- even though you'd OBVIOUSLY have to do that if you wanted to generate good numbers. I therefore infer that those people must have a goal other than generating good numbers.

Posted Sep 8, 2026 9:27 UTC (Tue) by kleptog (subscriber, #1183) [Link] (1 responses)

I would say the issue is more:

* That health insurance is tied to your job. If you leave your job you lose coverage making it harder to switch jobs than necessary. A system where part of the payment goes via taxes means unemployed people are still insured while not bankrupting them.

* As a small business, LWN is not in a position to negotiate as good premiums as larger businesses.

* As a large purchaser of health care, a government entity is in a position to tell the health providers where to go when they start charging exorbitant prices.

There are hybrid models, where health care is partially funded by a payroll tax, and partially direct premiums from people. It's not where the money comes from that makes the difference, it's the whole landscape around it.

If it's free, then you are the product

Posted Sep 8, 2026 19:24 UTC (Tue) by linuxrocks123 (subscriber, #34648) [Link]

If LWN can't get good rates, it is free to simply not provide health insurance and direct its employees to use the ACA exchanges. That's a perfectly valid option for a small business (under 50 employees).

The exchanges are federally subsidized, so that option is very attractive for the self-employed as well as small business owners and employees.

A free market works only when there is actual competition. The only thing worse than a public monopoly is a private monopoly - because it's more efficient at extracting profit.

The problem with health insurance is really simple and every country except the USA understood it: competition just does not work in certain "markets". That's it. Free markets are fantastic for selling computers and smart phones but they utterly fail in other areas. One size does not fits all.

Health is insanely complicated and extremely emotional and "customers" are completely ignorant and such an easy prey. Moreover, the corrupt health insurance industry in the US has been very successful in making it even more complicated - because they know obfuscation destroys competition. This is very well documented and they are not even trying to hide it. They know that crying "socialists!" on social media is usually enough because no one reads Excel spreadsheets. Some journalists do read Excel spreadsheets but no one reads those journalists anymore and they are dying (unlike LWN).

I was employed in the US for years and it was so ironic hearing everyone complain about how they were getting zero choice of insurance and extremely little choice of provider and limited access to treatment. Much less choice than with most single payer systems. And those were the people lucky enough to have some of the best, employer-paid insurance.

> Waving a magic wand and having the government provide services doesn't make those services free, man.

Of course not free. It only makes it twice cheaper for better average outputs[*] - as measured in all developed countries. Because in this area, only governments are big enough to have enough knowledge and negotiating power. Single payer also avoids funding a very large, parasitic "health care finance" industry, not needed any more. Is single-payer perfect? Absolutely not. It's the "worst system, except for all the private insurance ones."

By the way "single payer" is the obvious option (except in the corrupt US) but it's only a very small part of how you design health care and there are massive differences between systems across countries. Some have a very large private sector. Public health insurance does not imply public health care at all. But they are all conveniently regrouped under the same "socialist" banner when (not) seen from the US. Wait, people outside the US have doctors? Wow, I had no idea! ;-)

[*] the super rich do not care about "averages" and the US system _is_ better for them.

Forgot to say: multiple countries provide basic, tax-funded health insurance that people or employers can "top-up" with private insurance. Both insurance types can co-exist and they do!

There is a very large variety of systems, every country is different and it's hard to compare. But there is only one rich country that stands out by spending twice more per capita while still letting people go bankrupt when they get sick. Truly extraordinary.

As someone actually living in Ontario, I'll take OHIP any day of the week over US-style healthcare.

Even though our system is stressed, I've had excellent healthcare when I've needed it. And nobody here goes bankrupt because of medical bills. And nobody worries about medical insurance if they lose their job or need to switch jobs.

The US is a complete outlier, paying much, much more per capita than Canada for medical care (and Canada's also pretty expensive by world standards) while having worse outcomes on pretty much every measure like life expectancy, infant mortality, maternal mortality, sexual health, and so on.

Suffice it to say...we have opinions on health care and how it should be provided as well. That, however, is not really a topic for LWN, and we'll not be able to resolve it here. So perhaps we should all let this subthread rest at this point?

I wasn't trying to pick on OHIP, it just happened to be the system I'm familiar with because I used to help my now-wife with her Canadian income taxes. My wife had good experiences with OHIP, and she misses it. She especially misses the "every doctor is in-network" part.

I won't say any more on this except on the off-site off-ramp if anyone goes there, but I hope it's okay to clarify I wasn't trying to pick on Ontario.
