Hi,

I'd like to let your readers know about some great new developments with
the Sweep sound editor (http://sweep.sourceforge.net/).

Sweep is a full-featured open source sound editor, now used in production
at Pixar and rapidly gaining popularity elsewhere. It features a character
called Scrubby who is a very intuitive "scrub" tool and makes editing
sounds a breeze. You can use Sweep for general sound editing on your Linux
desktop, and thanks to Scrubby you can also use it as a tool for live DJing
and experimental music.

Sweep has undergone many changes recently to make it ready for widespread
use, and I'd like to invite readers to try out the latest version (0.5.6).

You may be familiar with Sweep 0.1.1, which was demoed at AOSS (Adelaide),
Linux World (New York) and FOSDEM (Brussels) in 2001, and is available in
many distributions.

In recent releases, many new features have been added including interactive
scrubbing, recording, support for LADSPA 1.1 effects plugins and
multichannel sound files, multithreaded background rendering, unlimited
undo/redo, mouse wheel zooming, reverse playback and overall stability and
usability improvements.

The latest release (0.5.6) is available as a source tarball at:

    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sweep/sweep-0.5.6.tar.gz?download

Screenshots are available at:

Also, for readers in Sydney, Australia, there will be a demo of the latest
Sweep features including live DJing and experimental music techniques at
the Sydney LUG meeting on Sep. 27 2002; see http://www.slug.org.au/

Sweep is designed to be intuitive and to give you full control. It includes
almost everything you would expect in a sound editor, and then some:

	* precise, vinyl like scrubbing
	* looped, reverse, and pitch-controlled playback
	* playback mixing of unlimited independent tracks
	* looped and reverse recording
	* internationalisation
	* multichannel and 32 bit floating point file support
	* LADSPA 1.1 effects support
	* multiple views, discontinuous selections
	* easy keybindings, mouse wheel zooming
	* unlimited undo/redo with fully revertible edit history
	* multithreaded background processing
	* shaded peak/mean waveform rendering, multiple colour schemes

Sweep is Free Software, available under the GNU General Public License.

More information is available at:

I would also like to thank Pixar Animation Studios and CSIRO Australia for
supporting the development of this project.

cheers :)

Conrad Parker
