Long term financial view

Parent article: Free software needs free tools

Tools can become complex and need maintenance. If we want very good Free Software tools, we have an interest that their development is well funded.

Many proprietary platforms and tools offerings use a multi-sided business model, where they give a bit of their product away without costs and take more money from business and government customers. So even when using their products, you will support their business.

Everybody should be aware of this business model and how it negatively affects availability of alternative (and better) solutions. So it is good advise to also invest (at least a bit) in long term Free Software options.

This is a topic that is discussed for many years, for example here is an 2001 FSFE warning about Sourceforge becoming proprietary: https://fsfe.org/news/2001/article2001-10-20-01.en.html
