“Rigorously undocumented” and “no real users” sounds a lot like someone’s vibecoded slop “project” to me, honestly.

Why exactly is this newsworthy?

I don't know about the former. Plenty of features from established developers and maintainers have been described as "rigorously undocumented" here, sometimes with context provided in cover letters.

Jon is, among his other roles, the kernel's documentation maintainer. So it's his prerogative to get grumpy when patch sets don't include corresponding documentation updates.

I'm aware. What's disappointing is that it seems that such grumpiness is not enough to warrant relevant patch series updates.
