I use and love XFCE4 and was feeling much trepidation as it became obvious X11 would eventually go away. I hope they manage to keep the XFCE4-ness of the environment under Wayland.

I think they will. I'm typing this in a XFCE session under Wayland using labwc and the experience is almost the same as with X11 besides some minor inconveniences. Really great to see work has started on xfwl4, the window manager was basically the only XFCE component not running under Wayland yet: https://wiki.xfce.org/releng/wayland_roadmap
